OBJECTIVE - G.MG.A.3

Apply geometric methods to solve design problems (e.g., designing an object or structure to satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost; working with typographic grid systems based on ratios).

INTERPRETATION OF OBJECTIVE - G.MG.A.3

This obejctive wants the student to attack those open-ended problem design types of questions - to look at the constraints and optimization of the situation.

SKILLS

(1) The student will be able solve design and optimization problems.

THE BIG IDEA

The purpose of this is standard is to have student experience problems that are messy – problems that require many elements of information to make them meaningful.  We want them to think – to truly problem solve what life really looks like.

TRAPS & PITFALLS

The real problem is where do we find these types of problems.  To design a ‘real’ problem it requires a great amount of information about the situation.  Who has time for this…. Or who has the expertise to do this?

PAST CONNECTIONS

Students come to geometry with some basic knowledge of perimeter and area.  While in geometry they will learn more about volume.

FUTURE CONNECTIONS

Estimating size, shape and form is important in dealing with real world problems that don’t come in easily packaged problems.  The skills learned here will give students a chance to attack harder problems.

MY REFLECTIONS (over line l)

You will see that the only way to address this type of problem is to look to those groups that have expertise in this type of problem design.  I am still working out how to integrate this experience into my classroom.
